It can happen to anyone. Summer hits and all schedules fly out the window. Vacations, shorter work hours, or even a long holiday weekend can throw off gym routines, healthy eating, and even a daily rhythm. As school begins and Labor Day is around the corner, here are some ways to get back some routine you may have lost.
Start small and set attainable goals. If your schedule or daily habits really changed over the summer, it can seem a daunting task trying to reign everything back in. Pick one habit to rework at a time. If you started your day later in the summer, don’t try to wake up at 5am every day. Try pushing your alarm clock back 30 minutes at a time to get back to your normal time. If you have not made it to the gym in a few days or maybe weeks because of traveling, set an attainable goal like two days and then walk around your neighborhood on off days. If you miss a day, don’t be discourage. Just try again the next!
Tackle what you can improve right away. Instead of focusing on what was lost, think of what you have to work with. Were you able to be more relaxed with your clothes or appearance over the summer? Trade in your summer casual dress for more formal, business attire. Take a few extra minutes to style your hair or pick out a tie. Take time after work to meditate on the day or look up simple breathing exercises to help you relax.
Make a plan and write it out. This can look like a simple sheet of paper with a checklist or a calendar with each habit marked out on certain days. Try out a new habit each week like cooking dinner on a couple of nights instead of ordering out or taking 10 extra minutes in the morning to eat breakfast. Another way to make a plan is to have someone to do it with you. Accountability will ensure that you stick to your goals.
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Give yourself lots of grace and remember that you have done it all before you just need to get back into it!
